Exhibition 01
Yi Lian Undercurrent & Warmcurrent
20 Dec — 20 Dec 2025
Video projected into the corner over dark water, a sunset and cloud scene, orange spheres, fireplace at left

Our first exhibition, “Warmcurrent & Undercurrent” by Chinese artist Yi Lian, consisted of the screening of three audiovisual pieces created between 2016 and 2018. These works engage with the artist’s childhood memories of his hometown flooding during the rainy season. Exhibiting these works in a flooded LOCAL felt tremendously fitting to us in terms of the formal qualities of the images and the characteristics of the space. Furthermore, the video looked very intriguing as it reflected off the water’s surface and its gentle ripples. But people came wearing swimsuits and bringing towels. They swam, creating a very unique dynamic that influenced the experience of the artwork. The space facilitates forms of interaction that slightly alter the rules of how art is exhibited. Yi Lian felt that his work took on new meaning or was reactivated by being exhibited under these conditions.
